Welcome back to the 40th edition of Chalming Culture Club.
This week’s newsletter is hitting your inbox a little early so we could cover everything happening in Los Angeles for 4th of July — from traditional fireworks displays to parties and swim socials. Enjoy, and be safe!
Later in the weekend, there are pop up markets, sample sales and a nose candy scent swap (confused? read on). Plus, a secret bar and restaurant hidden down an Echo Park alleyway and a Katie Holmes curated fashion collection.
Without further adieu, we’re excited to bring you the #40th sitting of the Chalming Culture Club.
What we’re doing…
The Hollywood Bowl’s Fireworks Spectacular is back for those who want a wholesome and community-feeling 4th evening celebration (and a very good fireworks show).
The historically invite-only Red, White, & Bootsy 4th of July party has released tickets for this year’s event at Nobu Malibu. With its strictly-enforced all-white dress code, Malibu beachfront setting and celebrity-ish attendees, there’s no 4th of July event quite as L.A. as this.
Want to spend the day poolside with friends and spritzs? The Silver Lake Pool & Inn is hosting a swim social on the afternoon of the 4th from 1-5pm.
There’ll be patio DJs all day of the 4th at Belles Beach House in Venice.
Later in the week, Pop Up People is hosting a market in Sunset Junction in Silver Lake on Saturday, featuring food, flowers, tarot readings and more.
Belle the Label is having a warehouse sample sale this weekend, Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm.
On Saturday night, Murmers art gallery is hosting a Nose Candy Scent Swap with the Nose Candy podcast. Turn up with a bottle of perfume you no longer want that’s at least half full and trade it for one you can’t live without. Guests are invited to sniff and sample between refreshments. There’ll be a DJ and a raffle. 5:30-8:30pm.
What we’re reading…
One of our favorite The Cut fashion writers Danya Issawi launched her Substack last week with a personal essay about the promise of suburbia. More great writing delivered straight to our inbox — say less.
What we’re watching…
The new season of The Bear (obviously).
What we’re listening to…
Call Her Daddy’s Alex Cooper in conversation with therapist Orna Guralnik of Couples Therapy.
What we’re eating…
Anything and everything at Bavel, including the above labneh cheesecake. Drool.
What we’re drinking…
Dada Echo Park is the secret bar and restaurant hidden in the alley behind Dada Market in Echo Park. Try the Carpool, their take on an espresso martini made with vodka, creme de cassis, cocoa, cold brew, and coffee liqueur, or the Manifest Yes, a kumquat and fennel margarita.
What we’re shopping…
Katie Holmes’ designer collaboration with A.P.C., featuring a very cute pair of wedge sandals. Yet more confirmation that the wedge is back, baby.
What we’re thinking about…
The Cut’s new piece on how the NDA became the defining legal document of our time: “One study says a third of American workers have signed one; another puts the number at more than half. NDAs are being given out to roommates, to parents, to boyfriends and ex-girlfriends, and to bachelor-party attendees and wedding guests.”
Where we’re going…
Capitola, a small seaside town in Santa Cruz County, California located on the northern shores of Monterey Bay where the beachfront houses are painted all the colors of the rainbow. Book Shadowbrook Restaurant ahead of time!
